Shannon Garson Porcelain Demonstration April 2, 2016
$100.00
10am-4pm
This demonstration workshop will follow Shannon’s process from inspiration to finished pot. She will demonstrate how the thrown form initiates the drawing process, layering techniques, using ceramic pigments and terra siglata within a drawing, using photographic decals and working with line, composition and three dimensional surfaces.
There will be an hour break for lunch.
About Shannon's process:
“Making pots in the studio starts from the experience of the landscape. From the moment I open a bag of clay and start weighing it into balls to throw on the wheel I am thinking of a particular aspect of the landscape. Sometimes I throw “gleanings” from the bush or the rockpools into the porcelain The pots grow wobbly, the rims ragged. The base always has a fine turned foot, the perfect circle contrasting against the fluctuant body. Drawing is a continuation of this process, regenerating an experience of being immersed in landscape on a pot. Drawing adds layers and the clay body is added onto the surface of the pot in the form of terra sigilata a fine slip made from refined clay. The drawings gradually emerge from the surface as I fire and draw and fire again, finding the essence of the landscape.”
